Ryan, in his presentation of Doctor Faustus by Marlowe, asked if we believe that Doctor Faustus is based on Calvinistic beliefs. Do you believe that Doctor Faustus was predestined to go to Hell? Do you think Marlowe shares John Calvin’s belief?

“God preordained…a part of the human race, without any merit of their own, to eternal salvation, and another part, in just punishment of their sin, to eternal damnation.” John Calvin

I personally believe that Doctor Faustus is a Calvinist play. Faustus asks for repentance before he dies and still goes to hell, which would suggest that he was predestined. The Christian belief is that anyone who seeks forgiveness is granted it and assures their pathway into heaven. What other religious beliefs was Marlow suggesting to his audience in Doctor Faustus?

When I was in highschool my theatre class studied Commedia Dell’ Arte for our entire year! It was one of the best experiences of my life. I really had the opportunity to delve into the world of improv and creating characters. When we first started to study Commedia we first started with the art of improve. Without us knowing it, a lot of the scenarios that we created as a class together and performed portrayed many of the stock characters from the orgins of commedia. We had yet to learn about these commedia characters, but once we did we started to fully grasp how commedia and it’s characters has influenced our story telling skill still today.

These characters, the lovers, the servants, the wingman, the overly proud macho man, the creepy old rich guy, and the jokester, have all been apart of our entertainment culture. I want to ask: what connections have you seen between the Commedia stock characters of yesteryear and the films, tv shows, and theatre we have today. I’m excited to see what you all come up with!

I have posted a video above of a Commedia production we studied in high school! Enjoy!!!

I know we’re on break, but I couldn’t hold it in! I thought it might be neat to research holidays and celebrations during the Elizabethan era. I bet, for the upper class it was SO elaborate! I would suppose the lower class would be something like a the lower class featured in one of my all time FAVORITE holiday movies!

A MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL!!

Even though this movie is set during the Victorian Era, I connected the two through research where I found strong similarities (since the Victorian Era idealized the Elizabethan Era). I felt like this was a good example of a typical lower class “holiday” meal.

Here’s the clip from a visit to Bob Cratchet’s house on Christmas Eve (enjoy!):

Let me know any connections you might make, like an example of a large holiday feast for Royalty or Upper Class!

I had to make another page to connect my Art and Architecture class with ours! There are so many different ways the two are intertwined, I was itching for an area where I could go into depth about the two!

During the Renaissance the connections are endless, according to Encyclopedia Britanica,

Just before 1500, Italian amateur actors were performing classical comedies on stages with no decoration except for a row of curtained booths. By 1589, complex painted scenery and scene changes were being featured in production in Florence. And by 1650, Italy had developed staging practices that would dominate European theatre for the next 150 years.

Something interesting I found when searching artists was Richard Braines. He was the artist of many portraits of Marlowe and was also his “friend”. According to a blog on Marlowe and Shakespeare Brianes was a “double agent”. Accusing Marlowe of being an atheist and helped to create a quarrel between the two which further lead to his staged fake death.

Ok, so I LOVE the folk genre of today’s music (I even host a weekly radio show called “Folk Ya”) and when traveling back in time found that they had a genre of folk music too! I set forth to discover the difference and make some connections between the two!

When searching for a connection I found this cool video with an instrument that connected the two genres, check it out!!! So cool!

I also found this guy who is performing an actual English folk song from the Renaissance called: “A Farewell and Adieu to You”

And finally, today’s version of folk (according to me, your current folk music guru) ♥

ENJOY!

According to Real.com “folk” music during the renaissance time was: Simpler than medieval rhythms and melodies, Renaissance music (1450-1600) utilized less complex harmonies and was greatly influenced by the push toward secular art.
